0840: SWIMMING - Unsafe water temperatures led to

14 competitors withdrawing from the 25km open water races at the World Championships in Shanghai.

Defending men's champion Verio Cleri of Italy, who stopped four hours into the race, said it was "too hot and too dangerous" to continue. Another Italian, Edoardo Stochino, was pulled from the water 50 minutes later and taken away on a stretcher as officials poured cold water over his chest. The water temperature had been 30.5C (87F) at the start of the race.
