Good vibrations buzzed through the music industry yesterday as the founding members of The Beach Boys announced that they were reuniting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band's getting together.
Considered by many to be one of the most talented songwriters in pop, Brian Wilson put past grudges aside to team up with Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks for a new album and a huge international tour, ending months of speculation.
Wilson, who recently denied that a reunion was on the cards, telling Q magazine "I don't really like working with the guys," announced that he had missed them after all. "This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again," he said.
His motivations for coming back to the fold remain unclear, but in the earlier interview he mentioned that money was an incentive. "Money's not the only reason I made records," he said, "but it does hold a place in our lives."
The 50-date tour – which kicks off at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on 27 April – and glut of catalogue rereleases is likely to provide just that. Mike Love, Wilson's cousin and part of the original lineup, explained how the reunion had occurred. The band had come together at Capitol Records to rerecord the hit Do it Again before working on harmonies for a new Brian Wilson song. "It was a thrill to be around a piano again with Brian, Alan and Bruce and experience firsthand the brilliance of cousin Brian's gift for vocal arrangements," he said. "Music has been the unifying and harmonising fact of life in our family since childhood. It has been a huge blessing that we have been able to share with the world. Wouldn't it be nice to do it again? Absolutely!"
