David Cameron has declared he is "taking on the enemies of enterprise", calling it "the most almighty job to do". He said: "I am going to watch those banks like a hawk and make sure they deliver for Britain's small businessmen and women."

Mr Cameron said that he doesn't believe in simply standing out of the way of business, and that "an entreprise Government is an active Government."

In a speech at the Conservative Spring conference he attacked Labour's record in Government. Speaking about recent revelations about lightbulb spending he said: "Let us make this a lightbulb moment for the whole country; never trust Labour with your money ever again".

Mr Cameron defended recent decisions to keep up aid spending, saying: "we are are saving lives, and everyone in this country can be proud of that."

Ed Balls has hit back at the suggestion that Labour were unsupportive of entrepreneurship, saying: "If David Cameron wants to know who is the real enemy of enterprise and growth in Britain today he only needs to look next door at his own Chancellor. It is George Osborne’s reckless plan to cut too deep and too fast, which has seen the economy go into reverse.

“David Cameron and George Osborne appear to be in denial that in the real world families and businesses are facing the squeeze, petrol prices are at a record high, unemployment is going up again and the recovery has stalled. And they don’t seem to understand that without strong growth and more jobs we can’t get the deficit down."

George Osborne has said that having a 'Plan B' for the economy could cause markets to crash which would lead to "panic". Mr Osborne added that enterprise zones, to be championed by the Prime Minister in a speech later today, are "just one way" of helping the economy to recover.
